2016 AHFA NSW HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR - FINALIST.
Shikku is a collection that radiates Parisian chic and elegance, underpinned by a strong scaffold of precise tailoring that has been purposefully displaced. The colliding of these two pronounced aesthetics results in a collection that is sublimely sophisticated and displays moments of real hair fashion evolution.
Oscillating beautifully between wildly Avant Garde silhouettes and cool editorial finishes, Shikku is a definitive hair fashion presentation in both spirit and in style. Whilst the artist has drawn an overall conceptual reference from the Paolo Roversi Dots//Stripes// Black//White campaign from 2011, homage to the highly influential Japanese Designer Yōji Yamamoto provides the key stimulus for six unique hair designs.
Choosing to work with a purposefully restrained palette, Unali takes a tonal cue from the fashion designer who maintains a predominantly black precedence with shots of bold red throughout his seasonal collections. This interplay between monochrome and crimson is brought to life via a uniformed red lip and a three-tiered fringe seen in the hero bob shot.
As Yamamoto explores the deconstruction of shape and a deep affection for asymmetry, Unali explores unconventional haircuts that wrap and frame the face and then diffuse off to one side, as seen in the asymmetric crop. Providing textural contrast, the inclusion of a steel-grey crispy mullet captures an alternatively more organic and raw finish, whilst the icy white blonde tips this collection into the realms of modern haute couture.
The courage and commitment to really push traditional contours through both cutting and styling, provides tangible evidence of an artist who has evolved significantly in looking to cement her signature aesthetic upon which she will continue to build.
