About 31 years ago, after working at a simple barbershop, an Italian immigrant in his 20’s opened his own unisex hairdressing salon in Australia. He had no idea if the salon would continue in the family, and he certainly never assumed that his daughter would take over the reigns. Well, SHE DID! I’m Maria. Juggler of #ftbabyandre, marriage, business, family, healthy lifestyle, fitness.....oh and HAIR!
Thanks to my Papà’s hard work, dedication and passion, I now have a hair salon located in Sydney, s.81 Hair. Some days I feel like I inherited a job but most days there’s a buzz I cannot describe. I talk this up in part to being a big believer in the giving and receiving of ENERGY- I don’t think anything beats the buzz of a busy salon!
I aim to be proof that perseverance, genuine love of your job and a hell of a lot of hard work can overcome any potential geographical and networking barriers to making your mark in an industry. With my salon based outside of the typical Sydney hub, I have taken it upon myself time and time again to make my mark among those I want to work with. I have embraced the unlimited potential of social media and even been asked to help ease a few more hair-minded folk into this big new, scary world with a column for trade business bible HairBiz.
I'm not the bragging type but here goes:
Fashion? I’ve rocked it backstage with the best of them for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia shows including Romance Was Born, Bless’ed Are The Meek, Bec and Bridge and Lisa Ho. I worked with the ridiculously talented X-presion boys at Hair Expo. And need I say more than London- as Winner of the Alter Ego Italy Colour and Creative Challenge I was flown there to work with Global Ambassador Craig Smith on the Alter Ego Italy show at THE Ministry of Sound. SERIOUSLY!
Editorial? I am proud to be the ‘go to girl’ for some of Australia’s top session stylists, including Sarah Laidlaw, Richard Kavanagh and Alan White. These guys inspire me more than anything else- seeing them in action on shoots, backstage and in the salon, I am like a sponge soaking up everything I can. I love editorial work, so I was THRILLED to be named the De Lorenzo Gold Photographic Winner for Editorial. And most recently scoring another cover for an international mag.
Education? I still can’t believe the humbling experience of being selected as a leader and peer mentor for the AHC Youthworx initiative. I have directed hair for 6 shows at Sydney International Spa and Beauty Expo, presented on the Hair Expo main stage and mentored a finalist for the é Salon Global.Synergy initiative. Most recently being named one of the 4 members of the Australian FAME team for 2015!
So, I guess I’m super passionate about a lot of things… while this may be a downfall when it comes to fitting it all in- I choose to embrace the chaos and commitment of my life whole-heartedly every single day!
